How to Choose a Dry Herb Vaporizer (2026 Guide)

Switching from flame to vapor is one of the best upgrades you can make — better flavor, less smell, and your herb goes further. But the dry herb vaporizer wall is a whole galaxy of options: $40 pens, $400 German engineering, and everything in between. Here's the same walkthrough our crew gives in-store, so you can land on the right unit the first time.

First, what a dry herb vaporizer actually does

Instead of burning your flower, a dry herb vaporizer heats it to a precise temperature — hot enough to release vapor, not hot enough to combust. You taste terpenes instead of smoke, the room doesn't smell like a campfire, and the same bowl often stretches further than it would in a pipe. Already-vaped bud (AVB) comes out toasted brown instead of ash, which is how you know the oven did its job.

Conduction vs. convection: the big fork in the road

Conduction units heat the oven walls, and the herb cooks on contact — like a tiny cast-iron skillet. They're cheaper, heat up fast, and are simple to use. The trade-off: you'll want a fine, even grind and the occasional stir, or the middle of the bowl stays green.

Convection units push hot air through the herb, so the whole bowl extracts evenly with better flavor. They cost more and sometimes take a little longer to heat, but the vapor quality is noticeably smoother.

Hybrids (like the Storz & Bickel Mighty+) do both, and it shows — they're the benchmark most other portables get measured against.

Session vs. on-demand heating

A session vape heats the whole oven and keeps it hot until the bowl is done — great for finishing a full chamber solo or passing it around. An on-demand vape only heats while you're drawing, so you can take two puffs, pocket it, and come back an hour later without wasting the rest of the bowl. Light users and lunch-break types usually end up happier with on-demand or a small-oven session unit; heavy users and couch-session folks want a full-size session vape.

Size, discretion, and where you'll actually use it

Be honest about your use case. A pocketable unit like the Pax Mini 2 disappears in your hand and warms up in under half a minute — perfect for hikes along the Mission Reach or a concert at the AT&T Center parking lot (21+, where legal, obviously). A bigger unit like the Mighty+ is technically portable, but it mostly lives on the coffee table — in exchange you get a bigger oven, cooler vapor, and battery for days.

Battery: the spec everyone forgets to check

Look for three things: USB-C charging (standard now — skip anything with a proprietary cable), sessions per charge (4–8 is typical for portables), and whether the battery is internal or removable. Internal batteries are sleeker; removable means you can swap in a fresh cell instead of retiring the whole device when the battery ages. If you vape mostly at home, a unit that works while plugged in is a nice bonus.

Temperature control: dial vs. presets

Lower temps (around 350–375°F) give you maximum flavor and a lighter, clearer effect. Higher temps (390–420°F) produce thicker vapor and heavier extraction. Budget units give you 3–5 presets, which is honestly plenty to start. Full digital control matters more once you know your preferences — a lot of regulars start low and walk the temp up as the session goes, which presets can't really do.

Oven size and the grind factor

A 0.15g oven and a 0.4g oven are very different commitments. Small ovens suit solo, low-key use; big ovens suit sharing. Whatever you buy, a quality grinder matters more with a vaporizer than with any pipe — conduction units especially want a fine, fluffy, even grind to extract properly. If your grinder is a crusty gas-station relic, grab a proper one from our grinder collection while you're at it; your oven will thank you.

What you get at each price tier

Under $100: Solid conduction starters like the Yocan Vane 2, G Pen Dash+ and the Ooze Pinch. Presets instead of precise temps, smaller ovens, but a real vapor experience and the cheapest way to find out if dry herb vaping is for you.

$100–$250: The sweet spot for most people. Think Pax — premium build, smart heating, better battery, apps and fine-tuned temp control. Units in this range routinely last years.

$250 and up: Storz & Bickel territory (Mighty+, VEAZY). Hybrid heating, medical-grade build quality, the smoothest and most even extraction you can get in a portable. Buy-once-cry-once.
