Grinder Types

• 2-piece — grind and collect in one chamber. Cheapest and simplest.
• 3-piece — adds a collection chamber below the teeth so ground material drops through.
• 4-piece — adds a mesh screen and kief catcher underneath. The best value for regular use.
• Electric grinders — battery powered, hands-free, useful if grip strength is an issue.
• Mill-style grinders — Flower Mill and similar designs that tumble rather than shred, preserving trichomes.

Materials

Aircraft-grade aluminum is the standard for good reason — sharp teeth, smooth threading, and it survives being dropped. Stainless steel grinders are heavier and last effectively forever. Wood and acrylic grinders are inexpensive but dull faster. Check the tooth pattern too: diamond-cut teeth pull material through more evenly than simple pegs.

Grind Size Matters

For rolling papers and cones, aim medium-fine — fluffy enough to breathe, fine enough to pack evenly. For bowls and water pipes, go slightly coarser so nothing pulls through the hole.

How do I clean a grinder? Freeze it, tap out the residue, then soak the metal parts in isopropyl alcohol and rinse thoroughly.

What size grinder should I buy? 2.0–2.5 inches suits most people. Larger diameters grind more at once but don't fit a pocket.
