How to Clean a Glass Pipe the Right Way (It Takes 5 Minutes)

A dirty pipe ruins flavor, harshens every hit, and eventually clogs completely. The fix costs about a dollar in supplies and five minutes of your time. Here's the method we recommend to every customer at our San Antonio shops.

What You Need

You need four things: 91–99% isopropyl alcohol (higher is better), coarse salt (kosher or Epsom), a zip-top bag or sealable container, and cotton swabs or pipe cleaners for the stubborn spots. That's it — skip the sketchy "miracle" cleaners.

Step-by-Step: Hand Pipes

1. Empty it. Tap out loose ash and use a pick or paperclip to clear the bowl.
2. Bag it. Put the pipe in the zip-top bag, pour in enough iso to submerge it, then add a generous tablespoon of coarse salt. The salt is your scrubbing agent — it physically knocks resin off where you can't reach.
3. Shake. Seal the bag and shake for 1–2 minutes. For heavy buildup, let it soak 30 minutes (or overnight) first, then shake again.
4. Rinse hot. Rinse thoroughly with hot water until every trace of alcohol smell is gone. Never smoke out of a piece that still smells like iso.
5. Detail and dry. Hit remaining spots with an iso-dipped cotton swab, do a final rinse, and let it air-dry completely.

Step-by-Step: Bongs & Rigs

Same chemistry, bigger vessel. Pour out the dirty water immediately (old bong water is where the smell lives). Pour iso and salt directly into the base, cover the openings with your palms or silicone caps, and shake. Clean the bowl and downstem separately in their own bag. Rinse everything with hot water until spotless. Change your bong water every session — it's the single biggest thing you can do for flavor and cleanliness.
