Walk up to the kratom shelf at any of our San Antonio shops and you'll see a wall of reds, greens, whites, and golds — powders, capsules, extract shots, tablets. If nobody's ever broken it down for you, it looks like a code you're supposed to already know. It isn't. The color system is simple once someone explains it, and that's what this guide is for.
Quick note before we start: kratom is a botanical, not a medicine, and nothing here is health advice. Everyone responds differently. We sell kratom to adults 21 and up, period.
First, what is kratom?
Kratom comes from the leaves of Mitragyna speciosa, a tropical tree in the coffee family that grows across Southeast Asia — Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Borneo. The leaves are harvested, dried, and ground into powder, which is either sold as-is, packed into capsules, or concentrated into extracts. The names you see on packaging (Bali, Borneo, Thai, Maeng Da) usually refer to the region the leaf style is associated with or the grade of the harvest.
What the colors actually mean
Red, green, and white refer to the color of the vein in the leaf and — more importantly — how the leaf was harvested and dried. Maturity and drying method change the alkaloid profile of the finished powder, which is why the colors have different reputations.
Red vein
Red vein kratom comes from mature leaves, typically dried longer. Reds are the most popular color on our shelves and are generally described by regulars as the mellow, evening end of the spectrum. If you look at our house favorites like K Chill's Red Hush capsules, you'll notice reds dominate the "wind down" side of the category.
White vein
White vein comes from younger leaves with a shorter drying time. Whites sit at the opposite end of the spectrum from reds — customers usually reach for them earlier in the day. White Elephant (big, floppy ear-shaped leaves — that's really where the name comes from) is a good example of a classic white.
Green vein
Green vein is harvested in the middle of the leaf's maturity, and its reputation matches: the middle ground. Greens like Green Malay or Green Maeng Da are usually the answer when a first-timer asks us "just tell me where to start." Balanced, predictable, everywhere.
Gold and yellow
Golds and yellows aren't a vein color — they're blends or altered drying processes, most often red-based. Bali Gold is the classic example: a red-leaning leaf with a longer cure. Treat golds as "red-adjacent with a twist," and read the label, because every brand does its gold a little differently.
Powder vs. capsules vs. extracts
Powder is the raw, ground leaf — the most flexible and most economical way to buy kratom, and the standard for anyone who tosses and washes or brews it as tea. The trade-off is the taste, which we'll diplomatically call "earthy."
Capsules are the same powder, pre-measured and taste-free. They cost a little more per gram, but for beginners the built-in consistency is worth it. Browse our kratom capsules if you want the no-guesswork route.
Extracts — shots like O.P.M.S. Gold and MIT 45, extract tablets, and tinctures — are concentrated. They're the strongest format per milliliter and are priced accordingly. Our honest guidance: extracts are for experienced kratom users who already know how they respond to plain leaf. If you're new, start with powder or capsules and work up slowly. When you're ready, the extract collection will still be here.
Lab testing is the whole ballgame
Kratom quality varies wildly between vendors, and the difference is invisible from the outside of the bag. The only thing that separates clean leaf from sketchy leaf is third-party lab testing — a certificate of analysis (COA) verifying alkaloid content and screening for heavy metals, salmonella, and adulterants.
Texas regulates kratom rather than banning it: state law sets labeling and purity requirements for kratom products and prohibits sales to minors, and (as always in Texas lately) the rules keep evolving — we track them the same way we track hemp law in our Texas hemp law guide. We stock brands that meet those standards, and we maintain a dedicated COA-verified kratom collection for products with current lab paperwork we can actually show you. If a shop can't produce a COA, buy your kratom somewhere else — even if that somewhere else isn't us.
Picking your first kratom: the 60-second version
Start with a green vein in capsule form from a lab-tested brand. Start low — you can always take more next time, you can't take less. Stick with one strain for a week or two before you judge it or switch, keep it away from alcohol and other substances, and stay hydrated (like coffee, kratom is dehydrating). And skip extracts entirely until plain leaf is familiar territory. That one paragraph is 90% of what our staff tells every new kratom customer.
Come see the wall in person (or don't leave the couch)
Reading about strains only gets you so far — sometimes you just want to point at the shelf and ask a human. Our crew at all of our San Antonio locations talks kratom every single day and will happily match you to a starting point. Already know what you want? Order from the full kratom collection online and we'll bring it to your door with same-day delivery across San Antonio. Either way, the leaf finds you. 🛸
