Walk up to the glass case at any of our San Antonio shops and you'll see everything from $40 mini rigs to heady one-of-one pieces that cost more than your rent. Somewhere in between is the right rig for you — and picking it is a lot easier once you know which four or five things actually matter. Here's how our crew helps first-time buyers choose a dab rig, minus the sales pitch.
First decision: glass rig or e-rig?
Before anything else, decide how you want to heat your concentrates.
A traditional glass rig uses a quartz banger heated with a torch. It's the classic setup: more ritual, more control once you learn it, and usually a lower cost of entry. If you like the process — timing your heat-up, watching the puddle spin — glass is the way.
An e-rig like the Puffco Peak Pro heats itself to an exact temperature at the press of a button. No torch, no guesswork, same hit every time. It costs more up front, but it's the easiest possible landing for a beginner and the daily driver most of our staff reaches for. We're an authorized Puffco dealer, which means real warranty support on every Peak Pro we sell — something you won't get with gray-market listings online.
Plenty of people end up with one of each. But if you're choosing your first, be honest about yourself: tinkerers love glass, convenience people love e-rigs.
Size: smaller is better (really)
This is where dab rigs and bongs part ways. With flower, a big water pipe means cooler, smoother smoke. With concentrates, a big chamber means your vapor travels farther, cools too much, and condenses on the glass — you literally lose your dab to the walls of the pipe.
That's why most quality dab rigs are 5 to 8 inches tall. A compact chamber preserves flavor and potency because the vapor reaches you while it's still, well, vapor. If a rig looks like a small bong with a banger stuck on it, that's exactly what it is — and it'll hit like one. Mini rigs aren't the budget option; they're the correct option.
Joint size and angle: the spec everyone forgets
The joint is where your banger connects, and it comes in a few flavors:
- 10mm or 14mm — most rigs use one of these. 10mm is common on minis; 14mm is the most universal size for replacement bangers and attachments.
- Male or female — a female joint on the rig takes a male banger, and vice versa. Check before you buy accessories.
- 90° or 45° — a 90° joint keeps the banger upright and level, which makes low-temp dabs easier to manage. It's what we'd recommend for a first rig.
Write your joint spec down (or snap a photo of the tag). Future-you, standing in the shop needing a new banger, will be grateful.
Percs and airflow: some is good, more is not
Percolators break your vapor into bubbles for smoother hits. On a dab rig you want modest percolation — a fixed showerhead, a simple diffused downstem, or a bubbler-style can. Stacked tree percs and heavy filtration belong on flower pieces; on a rig they strip flavor and add drag.
The test we use in-store: pull air through it. If it feels like sipping a thick milkshake, keep looking. A good rig has easy, open airflow with just enough water action to take the edge off.
The banger and the torch matter as much as the rig
A mediocre rig with a great quartz banger will out-perform a great rig with junk quartz. Budget for real quartz — brands like Bear Quartz earn their price — plus a carb cap to control airflow, dab tools, and cotton swabs for cleanup after every hit. If you go the glass route you'll also need a proper torch; a kitchen creme brûlée torch will technically work, but a shop-grade torch heats faster and more evenly.
A dab timer app (or just counting after heat-up) helps you find the low-temp sweet spot: heat the banger, let it cool the right amount, then dab. High-temp dabs waste material and taste like regret.
What should you spend?
Under $60: Solid mini rigs that do the job. Our house-line 6" minis are a favorite first rig — compact, durable, easy to clean.
$60–$150: Brand-name glass like MJ Arsenal, better percs, thicker joints, and complete box sets that bundle the banger, cap, and tools.
$150–$400+: E-rig territory (Pivot, Proxy, Peak, Peak Pro) and American glass, including heady pieces when you're ready to treat yourself.
You do not need to spend $400 to dab well. You do need decent quartz and the right-sized rig.
Keep it clean, keep it tasty
Concentrates leave residue that ruins flavor fast. Swab your banger while it's warm after each session, change your water daily, and give the rig a proper wash with cleaning solution whenever it starts looking cloudy. A clean rig is the single cheapest upgrade in dabbing.
